DENNIS’ DANCE: THE VANGUARD BALLET

One way to save tyres. The man in the air is Chris Dennis, a Duckhams-supported exponent of the fine art of Classic Saloon Car racing, seen here executing a pas de deux in his Vanguard Sportsman.

The instigator of the move was a rapidly pirouetting MkVIl Jaguar at the chicane before the finishing line at Donington. Fortunately, the intrepid Chris was able to resort to four wheels without actually rolling the beast, sustaining injuries, however, in the form of a very bent anti-roll bar, a distorted rolling chassis and ruptured oil pipe. The excitement didn’t end there, as the car was later used to tow the other Sportsman of Brian Pollard 200 miles home, in dense fog and with an oil pressure of around 5 to10 Ibs. A check of the big ends revealed very little wear and the engine remained unchanged until the end of the season.
