Scatter Rally Reports

January 8th
The first Scatter Rally of 2003 kicked off from The Chaser, Shipbourne.  There were only 5 crews competing, some people who should remain nameless (but won’t….Sam Collins!) were frightened off by the snow.
Andy and Vivien Elcomb won the event with a score of 200.  This was the second year in a row they have won my scatter.  Second place was David Gill and D Marley from the HRCR.  They beat  Mark Dawson and Daren Hall into 3rd place by getting just one more word in the tie-break, which was ‘How many words can you make from “I Deserve To Win”’.  Chin and Chris Scudder came home in 4th place with Stefan Davis and Dan Voutt coming home last.  Judging from their score they must have stopped for a cup of tea somewhere!

The result:

Andy Elcomb/Viv Elcomb (7oaks) 200 points  (max score would be 240 points)
D Marley/David Gill (HRCR) 190 points  (42 tie break)
Mark Dawson/Daren Hall (7oaks) 190 points  (41 tie break)
Chin/Colin Billings (7oaks) 110 points
Stefan Davis/Dan Voutt  20 points

A slightly disappointing entry of only six crews, if I’m honest, but the quality made up for the lack of numbers.  I guess I now must eat humble pie, when I admit that I haven’t been out this season.  So I wasn’t too sure at what level to set the navigation, I therefore opted for a fairly simple approach although I’m not so sure that our novice crews would agree, I even managed to baffle Andy E with a 10 figure map reference (and he keeps telling me he was a Boy Scout).
Whilst the start was at the Park Gate Inn located on the edge of map 188 nearly all the 34 points were located on map 189 on the North Downs the weather being fair meant that the lane were generally in nice condition although there was still plenty of mud out there to keep the drivers on their toes.  The biggest problem two crews had however was telling the time incurring not insubstantial penalties for this failing.

The result:

Andy Elcomb/Viv Elcomb (7oaks) 160 points
Roger and Antony McKenzie 70 points  (170 less 10 minutes penalty)
John and Viv Root  65 points
Stefan Davis and Daren Hall 60 points  (150 less 9 minutes penalty)
Mick Rose and Gill Emlow 45 points  (9 tie break)
Andy Watkins (solo) 45 points
