EDITORIAL

arch has come in like a lion (as my old Nan used to say) and the Speed Season is opening up before us.  Before I crack on with my bit, I must just apologise for the delay in February's Acorn hitting your mats.  We were endeavouring to get it out before the Kent Rally weekend but had a few technical problems, due to the amount of photographs in that issue.  I know they weren't the best quality, but I hope that all you award winners recognised yourselves!  If you would like a better copy of the photos, please let Ian Crocker our web man know an he will e-mail you a copy.  Sorry, but they are electronic copies as they were taken on a new-fangled digital camera.

May I also say thanks to all the contributions of jokes to the mag as well as the serious articles.  They are most welcome--keep it up all of you.  If you haven't yet put pen to paper or digit to keyboard,  and have a comment or burning issue you would like aired, let me know.  As you can see the Sam Collins article back in the September Issue is still causing a trickle of  suggestions and comments to come in.  It is this interest from you out there in reviving or starting something new that makes organisers sit up and take notice--hopefully!

The recent social night at The Bell was fun, and well done to Hales Vaughan for finding yet more weird and wonderful bits and pieces to get our brains puzzling.  Congratulations to Mark Dawson and Darren Hall for getting 22 and a half of those 33 objects right (where did the half an object come from, guys?).  The dynamic duo pipped Andy and Viv Elcomb to the large box of Quality Street by one point.  Ralph and I seemed to be about average with 12 points. (They were very obscure items!!)

Our social evening this month is a Competitor's Forum. This is a great chance for the new members to come and make themselves known and also to ask all those questions about getting started in motorsport; club championships; rules and regs -  what do they all mean; in fact anything that might have been keeping you awake at night (to do with motorsport!!!!)  There should be enough experienced club members to help you out.

As I am writing this, the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease is growing and is now affecting our sport. The 28th February Scatter was cancelled, and at the time writing the rest of the 12cars and scatters have been cancelled.  If you want to know more information, please contact the person organising the relevant event.  At the present time the Lydden Sprint is still going ahead.

The Kent Rally is over for another year and there is a Marshals' Eye View of the event in this edition (not quite good enough for Batturd Cup nomination, lads!)

Well the first Grand Prix of the new season has been and gone and Ferrari have set themselves up well.  Although tragedy struck with the death of a marshal.  So much for all the new safety features to stop wheels running away from the cars after impact!

Finally a few reminders to  everyone starting the new season:

  1. Make sure you have applied for your licence well before your first event,  "It's in the post" doesn't wash with the officials.

  2. Make sure you have a photograph on your licence (it doesn't have to be recent--the one in your '70s psychedelic shirt will do, they are all the rage now anyway, no accounting for the taste of the young people!)

  3. Make sure you have the relevant club/championship card with you.  It is no good to you or the officials if it is sitting on the sideboard at home!

Having been at signing on a few times last year, it amazed me how unready some competitors are, they must be descendants of Ethelred!  How about making 2001 the year you were organised!

Good Luck One and All.
