TROPHY RECORD KEEPER'S RAMBLINGS--March

he new season is well underway now, with scatter and 12-car rallies still available to new and experienced competitors alike. (STOP PRESS - Due to Foot and Mouth outbreak, these have been suspended for the time being, please ring organising club to check for latest info)

Our Kent Rally saw many of you out in the lanes marshalling well done and thank you! Your efforts will be rewarded with valuable C E White (marshalling) and Des Quin points to get you off the mark. Not only that, but your efforts will also count towards qualifying for the Rose & Crown and Rally Championships as well as the Marketing Machine Speed League.

With this issue of Acorn you should find the 2001 Yearbook which covers all of the various awards on offer to 7Oaks members. Some of the categories are a bit complicated but don't worry about that, just send your results to me and I'll do all of the hard calculating bit!

As always, I'm quite happy to give a bit more background info on any of the trophies, all you have to do is give me a shout down the phone or at The Bell on social evenings, or email me and I'll get back to you pronto.

For those new members, welcome to our club, have a good look at the Yearbook and any updates in the Acorn but never be too shy to ask questions. In fact the more noise you make will help us to get to know you, and reduce the chances of me missing you from a set of results.

Without doubt it's high time some recent names on various tables in the Yearbook need changing. In particular, who is going to knock Daren Hall off the top of the autotest pile? He's been there far too long now and needs some stiff competition! He can be beaten though; I've seen it happen at a Maidstone Autotest! Come on, have a crack at him!!

The autotests start in May and are good fun. They will teach you a heck of a lot about car control, even if it is only in 1st gear most of the time. No licences are needed or any special cars or equipment. Entry fees are modest too, and we are invited under the Weald Motor Club banner to most local events in the Southeast so there should be something nearby to suit. These events are not just for novices though, they are a good way to keep your hand in generally, and anyone who thinks they already know what to do if their car gets out of shape is probably over-confident and a fibber! Certainly there are some competitors out sprinting who could learn a thing or two about thinking about what lines to take.

For those members who rather fit into the "& District" part of the club's name, obviously it's difficult to meet you at the Bell or the evening autotests/scatters, but you are not forgotten we do care, honest! Through our membership of a number of Associations you can enter under 7Oaks for most sprints, hillclimbs and rallies in the southern half of England at least. It would be nice to hear from the occasional far-flung member in the Acorn (yes, Mr Lay, I know you have, you are the exception to the rule!), letting us know what stirs your blood about your local events, and sending some results in as well please. Even if 7Oaks is not invited directly or by Association, the Basil Tye Trophy is still up for grabs as it just records the amount of competing you do, and not your results. So Colin Rodger's forays into Belgium will count as would a race meeting at Knockhill - so long as we know that the 7Oaks flag is flying somehow.

That's all I'm going to say for the moment, have a good year and above all have fun (and tell us about it!).

Andy Elcomb
