Jubilee Summer Autotests - The First Two

May 13th 2004

A nice, dry Thursday evening saw the start of the Jubilee Summer Autotest Series in a reasonably recently mowed field, and with an entry of 28 competitors all raring to go!

Nice to see such a large number, including three from Chelmsford MC, three from B19 and one from Croydon MC.

Also very nice to see two entrants in the Production car section, Tom Burgess from B19 and our own James Patching, both under 18 and both learning fast – sadly in the latter’s case this involved dealing with a boiling Clio.

FTD and Class A were very closely contested with FTD finally going in favour of Chris Judge from Chelmsford’s Jim Bowie, but only by 1.52 seconds! But then second placed Mick Rose was only 3.3 seconds behind – definitely a battle to watch as the series progresses.

Ralph Travers was getting close to a Class B win for a while until Matt Endean, moving from Class A last year, finally pipped him, closely followed by Ian Crocker’s Honda.

In Class D, the battling Marina of Lee Busbridge and Craig McGurk was edged out by new member Darren Tyre, driving in his very first autotest – a great effort.

Class E, as usual had an interesting variety of cars, including Mike Knapman’s Rickman Ranger, but was finally dominated (?) by John Kemp and Hales Vaughan in the Sprite, just ahead of Charles Armstrong-Wilson’s rare and very pretty Fairthorpe Electron Minor.

It all happened again two weeks later……..

May 27 2004

Number two event saw battle for FTD rejoined in earnest between Chris Judge and subsequent Class A winner Jim Bowie – only 1.01 seconds separating them at the finish this time!

Young Tom Burgess drove his Mini round with great maturity and not a little verve to come in just .02 of a second behind Mick Rose.

Class B saw Maidstone & Mid Kent new members Russell Eccleston and Doug Norville sharing their Nissan Micra to take 1st and 4th respectively with Ralph Travers just failing to catch Matt Endean for second in class.

The very smart Mark 1 Escort of Darren Tyre managed to make it two in a row by seeing off Lee Busbridge in the battling Marina and Class E had Charles Armstrong-Wilson triumphant over new member Nick Maxwell and coming 3rd overall in the process.

Who will take the awards on June 10th, and will a little rain alter things…? We shall see.
