Thankfully our North Weald sprint proved to be a successful day with
75 competitors taking part. Our earlier fears about a very low entry due
to a date clash with the SEMSEC event at Lydden were proved wrong. Thank
you to those of you who volunteered your services to Chin and marshalled
on the day.
Having watched the European Grand Prix from the Nurburgring at the
weekend I was staggered to hear that Montoya was under investigation by
the stewards during the race for his daring move on Schumacher senior.
To add insult to injury, I was amazed to hear that Schumacher was not going
to be excluded from the race for receiving outside assistance from the
three marshals and the other unidentified individual (Spectator?) in shorts
and a T-shirt. Having had the opportunity to read the motor sport press
about the incident, am I the only person in the world who thinks he should
have been disqualified? I appreciate that the regulation as it has been
written allowed him to continue; but surely the spirit of the regulation
was that anyone receiving outside assistance should not be allowed to continue.
After all, it was a mistake by Schumacher that put himself into the gravel
trap and effectively out of the race. I wonder whether we shall see the
FIA delete any reference to ‘the engine running or starting’ in next year’s
regulations, hopefully we will!
