Name: Dawn Travers Occupation: Editor 1. When did you join 7 Oaks?……1988 2. What or who inspired you to get into motor sport?… Our friend Peter Jenkins who had been running an old formula ford. I rather liked being a groupie and having a pass to get into the paddock.! 3. What was your first competition car and why did you choose it? 'Y' Reg White Golf Gti--Ralph fancied being a boy racer. We decided that Road-going saloons was the way to go as it was a new affordable formula (Sound Familiar?) 4. Brief history to present day … While ralph raced and developed the Golf for Road Saloons, I did some sprints at Lydden, Brand s Hatch North Weald, Goodwood, attempted Valence Hillclimb once. Also took part in the BARC's Handicap Sprint Championship which had rounds at Lydden and Thruxton amongst others. Had a pole position at Lydden (because I was slowest in practice!), and was placed 6th. I managed to hold off the other competitors until the last lap! If only it had been one lap shorter! Did a round of the Winter Warmer Saloon Car Championships held at Brands. Have also Auto-tested in the Golf and my own rather ancient Nova. Sold the Golf in '91 to buy a house. Bought another race ready Golf which Ralph did one event in . Then came two kids and bye bye Golf No.2.. Have since stuck to marshalling. 5. Current Competition Car…Ralph's Vectra SRI, I think 2001 is the year I make my comeback! 6. Favourite venue/track/hillclimb and why?…Brands Hatch just because it is Brands! And Thruxton excellent speed circuit and challenging chicane. 7. Worst venue/track/hillclimb and why?…Brands before they extended that gravel trap at Paddock Hill Bend (see Q8) and of course the Kent Countryside for having very mature beech hedges which jump out at you at 3am!! 8. Worst/Most expensive accident…February 1999, whilst marshalling on the Kent Rally, wiped out the side of our Mondeo, nearly ended in the divorce courts! Also at a brands sprint I borrowed my friend Richard Smith's XR2i as the Golf wasn't back from the engine builders, span at paddock, hit the tyre wall. He was an absolute star about it. 9. Best/Favourite motorsport car ever...Has to be the Escort RS200 Rally Super Car, closely followed by the Lancia Delta Integrale and the Metro 6R4--so quick, so loud, so much body work! 10. Best/Favourite racing/rally driver ever...Colin McRae (cool customer), Damon Hill (such sexy eyes) and Gerhard Berger 'cos I met him whilst on a ski-ing holiday in Austria. |
