EDITORIAL

appy New Year Everyone! I hope that 2001 will be a Motor Racing Odyssey for you all (Sorry I had to use that, everyone else on radio, TV etc seems to be so why shouldn't we!!).

Welcome to the January issue of Acorn and my inaugural editorial.  Already  I have had some feedback about the jokes that have been appearing.  At the December  Noggin' and Natter, someone made a comment about the Acorn being a family magazine.  I have taken this on board and have raided my daughter Emma's new Smarties Joke Book  for the Kiddies Corner.  You have been warned!!  For those with a slightly more adult sense of humour,  you  have been catered for too!

(Note from ex-ed.--you may find, dotted about this issue, some small jokes of a 'Christmas Cracker' style--that's where I got them from!)

Hope you all had a good Christmas and you all got the new toys you wanted (new racing cam, the go-faster stripes, etc).  I sadly didn't get my new car.  Obviously Father Christmas couldn't fit the Peugeot 206 (in full rally trim of course) down our chimney, but he could have parked it outside and dropped the keys through the letterbox!

After reading the piece by Steve Medhurst  last month referring to the Action Man  Ferrari style car, we had one appear in our house Christmas Day, complete with Michael Schumaker lookalike Action Man in red overalls.  My son Ryan has test driven it just for you, dear reader and his report follows elsewhere in this issue.

We are following the Paris/Dakar Rally on Eurosport.  (We have recently acquired digital channels through cable)  There isn't much, a run down of the teams and riders/drivers  and some limited coverage of the first few stages so far, as it is early days.  A lot of the report was biased towards the motorbikes.  It never fails to amaze us that there are people out there crazy enough to do such a grueling event on a bike!  There were some good clips of last year's Rally though.  My hubby sat there wincing as the riders took their bikes over some very rough terrain.  It might have been something to do with the way their "bits" hit the very small saddles with each rut!!!  Hope that as the rally progresses there will be a bit more coverage of the cars.

There is a Self Interview at the back either this issue about yours truly. Many of you will probably remember the Travers name in context with the Kent Rally, as Sector Marshals who have fallen off the road two years running! Not this year, as we have a prior theatre engagement (George Vost, you can breathe easy!)  Give George a ring if you are able to fill our shoes (BUT PREFERABLY NOT DITCHES OR HEDGES!!) on the night, the more marshals there are, the easier it is for the organizers and better for the competitors.  Not enough marshals means that time controls can't be manned and there is more clearing up to do for the few who are there.

I will also mention the Annual Awards Dinner and Dance taking place at Leeds Castle on 20th January.  Get you tickets now!  If you receive this issue after the 20th, great "Do" wasn't it.  So nice to see so many of you there!

Bye for now!

Dawn Travers
