This is an open letter to the motorsport community regarding student motorsport.

It has always been difficult to co-ordinate motorsport competitions between students in this country.  The relatively high turnover in student club membership and committees makes maintaining communication difficult, and many clubs have had difficulty surviving in isolation through lean times.
When events have been organised, they have often had very low numbers of entries, and there is a strong risk that annual competitions such as the National Student Motorsport Championship may be lost. Many older people involved in club competition fail to realise or accept that student motorsport is the life blood and future of amateur motorsport in the UK. Association executives know there is a problem but don’t like to talk about it. And every year fewer and fewer new young competitors join motor clubs. We, a group of students and some more forward thinking older competitors have decided that it’s time for something major to be done. It is our aim to form an Association of Student Motor Sport. The ASMS will help to provide much needed continuity to student motor clubs, which suffer a great deal of membership churn. Very often new students are keen to start but don't know how, and their club has fallen by the wayside during the summer months often failing to register with various established organisations. From within this association we intend to boost student motorsport by uniting all the student motor clubs and promoting events such as the national student motorsport championships and the inter university karting championships. We also hope to provide advice on youth motorsport to established associations and motor clubs. The structure of the association will probably take the form of an as yet undecided executive of about five people.  Fifteen regional representatives will make up the rest of the committee - these regional representatives will offer their services as youth liaison / adviser to their regional association. We do however need people to come forward to assist us in achieving our goals.  If you are on the committee of a regional association, a student motor club or another motor club, and are interested then please contact us at:
