Things are relatively quiet on the competition front at this time of
year, what with the evening autotest series now finished and Mark Dawson
declared the overall champion, congratulations to him. We do however need
the support of an awful lot of you to help run the Spotted Dick & Custard
Stages at Longcross on Sunday 1st September. We need at least eighty marshals
on the day, so please volunteer your services, even if it is only to help
with setting up on the day before (details elsewhere in this Acorn). Remember,
your club occasionally needs help from YOU!
It was interesting to read this week of the appointment of John Grant
as the new Chairman of the MSA from December. It will be interesting to
see what he does to fulfil his objectives of ‘making the association more
approachable and increasing the MSA’s involvement in developing the grassroots
level of the sport’. He has at least realised that the MSA is seen as too
bureaucratic and too reticent to take the leadership role that members
think they should take. I and I’m sure you, look forward to hearing more
as he gradually gets his feet under the desk at Colnbrook!
Lastly, for those of you who like me have got bored with the show put
on by the Formula 1 boys recently, remember that the CART teams come to
race at Rockingham on the 14th September. Having been to see the race last
year, I can assure you that you won’t be disappointed, there’s loads of
overtaking and the speeds are incredible. They were circulating in under
25 seconds around the 1.5-mile oval last year and speeds are expected to
be higher still this year! Do yourself a favour and make the effort and
go and have a look, I’m sure that you won’t be disappointed.
